Acupuncture helps Headaches

An article in this week's British Journal of Medicine (1st May 10) has stated that acupuncture can help with prevention of migraine headaches. A Cochrane systematic review has found that patients can cut down the amount of pain killers they need to treat their migraine headaches when they have used acupuncture and medication to prevent migraines. Some of the data in this review was from two randomised controlled trials ie. good quality information.

Call us at Chester Acupuncture Clinic in Cheshire if you suffer from migraines and would like to see if acupuncture can help you.

Acupuncture and Fertiliy treatment

A recent article in the Telegraph (10th March 10) has reported that acupuncture does not aid fertility. Unfortunately there were no details or references to support this statement and I would therefore ask readers to be wary of scare-mongering headlines such as this. I am frustrated that acupuncture is being portrayed in such a negative light.

Acupuncture can treat many conditions associated with fertility problems. These include stress, anxiety, abdominal pains, regulating and improving menstrual problems, back pains etc.

There have also been studies to suggest use of acupuncture around the time of embryo transfer can aid implantation. As yet conclusive evidence to support this is still not available. However proving something works at an evidence based level is often very difficult. This means that the best quality studies should be 'double blinded randomised controlled trials'. In other words the acupuncturist and patient should not know if they are giving or receiving acupuncture, and there should be a treatment group and control group ( ie not receiving any treatment). Clearly this is a very difficult criteria to meet when dealing with administering acupuncture needles and the nature of giving acupuncture treatment.

Western Medicine tends to dismiss studies that do not conform to the above criteria. It does not allow for analysis of benefit at an individual level. Obviously many people find acupuncture helpful because it is a therapy that has been widely used in many countries for many centuries.

I would encourage anyone with chronic health problems to call us at the Chester Acupuncture Clinic in Cheshire to see if we think acupuncture can help you. It is safe and effective for many conditions and could significantly improve your quality of life.

New study on acupuncture

Website dnaindia.com this week published a piece about acupuncture relieving joint pain linked to breast cancer treatments.

A new study argues that Acupuncture could be an effective therapy for joint pain and stiffness in breast cancer patients who are being treated with commonly used hormonal therapies. The study was led by a cancer centre in New York and focused on the pain and stiffness that can be suffered in post menopausal women with breast cancer.

This is an interesting but small study. It suggests acupuncture could help patients who are taking anti-oestrogen medications such as breast cancer treatments. The anti-oestrogen effect makes the body think it is in a menopausal state. The symptoms of going through the menopause can be very unpleasant, one of them being increased joint pains and stiffness.

At Chester Acupuncture Clinic in Cheshire we have successfully treated many clients with joint stiffness and pains, and I have treated clients who are on anti-cancer medications with these symptoms with good effect.

We are often asked how does acupuncture treatment work? Acupuncture treatment is based on the principle that our health & well being is dependent on the balanced function of the body's energy known as 'Chi'. The objective is to restore and enhance the balance between the equal and opposite qualities of Chi, 'yin and yang'. Acupuncture treatment has pain relieving and relaxation benefits and also enables the body's self healing mechanism to work more effectively.

If you are are a regular blood donor you can still give blood and you can have acupuncture treatment. However you should inform the blood transfusion centre that you have had acupuncture treatment. There is no reason why you cannot give blood as the risk of blood infections is minimal due to the use of single use disposable needles. Upon request, we can provide certificates of attendance.

People on the blood thinning drug warfarin ask if they can have acupuncture treatment? As long as your INR is stable and within the therapeutic range for your condition, it is safe. Discomfort is often the most obvious worry. This is unlikely. The needles we use are very fine gauge. Occasionally there is mild discomfort such as a slight sharp sensation as the needle is inserted. If you have a pacemaker it is safe to have acupuncture treatment, but you CANNOT have a technique called electro-Acupuncture treatment applied to you.

Usually you may consult us without a doctor's referral but in some cases we may wish to contact your GP, with your permission and generally, 4 to 6 treatments are required to see a significant improvement in a problem condition. Occasionally some persons will need more. health & wellbeing insurance companies may pay for your treatments but this depends on which insurance company you are covered by and the type of policy that you hold. Please contact us if you wish to discuss this further.
