All things Acupuncture

At Chester Acupuncture treatment Clinic in Cheshire we believe in a holistic approach. We take a history and make a careful examination of every person. The treatment is tailored to every person's condition and a course of 4 to 6 treatments is usually offered. Continued treatment is dependent on the person's response to the treatment.

The clinic is run by Mr George Tam M.B.Ac.C and Dr Shana Tam M.B.B.S. D.R.C.O.G. Mr Tam was born in China and came to the United Kingdom in 1963 and he qualified as a RMN in 1966 and RGN in 1968. He graduated from The College of Acupuncture treatment, London in 1977. In 1995, he completed an advanced study of Acupuncture treatment and Moxibustion at China's International Training Centre, Guangzhou.

At the same time, Mr Tam progressed in the field of Nursing, becoming a Clinical Nurse Teacher. He subsequently became Director of Nursing at the Countess of Chester Hospital.

Mr Tam has a special interest in pain management and has worked in the Pain Clinic at the former Chester Royal Infirmary. Dr Shana Tam is a part time acupuncturist and part time general practitioner. She is a general practitioner at Alyn Family Doctors in Wrexham, North Wales. She is a fully registered member of the General Medical Council (1998) and British Medical Acupuncture Society (2001). Dr Tam achieved her Certificate of Competence in Medical Acupuncture treatment in 2003 and is recognised by some private insurance companies.

We are often asked how does acupuncture treatment work? Acupuncture treatment is based on the principle that our health & well being is dependent on the balanced function of the body's energy known as 'Chi'. The objective is to restore and enhance the balance between the equal and opposite qualities of Chi, 'yin and yang'. Acupuncture treatment has pain relieving and relaxation benefits and also enables the body's self healing mechanism to work more effectively.

If you are are a regular blood donor you can still give blood and you can have acupuncture treatment. However you should inform the blood transfusion centre that you have had acupuncture treatment. There is no reason why you cannot give blood as the risk of blood infections is minimal due to the use of single use disposable needles. Upon request, we can provide certificates of attendance.

People on the blood thinning drug warfarin ask if they can have acupuncture treatment? As long as your INR is stable and within the therapeutic range for your condition, it is safe. Discomfort is often the most obvious worry. This is unlikely. The needles we use are very fine gauge. Occasionally there is mild discomfort such as a slight sharp sensation as the needle is inserted. If you have a pacemaker it is safe to have acupuncture treatment, but you CANNOT have a technique called electro-Acupuncture treatment applied to you.

Usually you may consult us without a doctor's referral but in some cases we may wish to contact your GP, with your permission and generally, 4 to 6 treatments are required to see a significant improvement in a problem condition. Occasionally some persons will need more. health & wellbeing insurance companies may pay for your treatments but this depends on which insurance company you are covered by and the type of policy that you hold. Please contact us if you wish to discuss this further.
